Best to seek a local recommendation, from friends or family.
Local might cost slightly more, but when you HAVE to get or drop off an essential document, you can save time, which is money to solicitors, and sometimes maintain the chain by being able to pop in.Act in haste, repent at leisure.

I am using Conveyancing Warehouse at the moment (can't link, but they will show up easily enough on Google). I've just exchanged contracts.
I would definately recommend them - had excellent service so far in every way (better than I would expect even from a non-budget conveyancer) and they have very competitive costs.
But the point about mail is very valid, there are lots of things which need posting, which is fine if you are not in a rush, but when things get tight, then having to rely on mail can be frustrating. For example, I needed to get a document back to them to arrive yesterday, and two 'guaranteed delivery' letters didn't arrive on time due to snow, and all I could do was cross my fingers that they turned up before it was too late (which fortunately they did)0 -
Ecohing one of the above posts, please please please use a solicitor from your local city/town. They know your area and the agents usually deal with most of them on a regular basis, so there is already a working relationship there.
Out of town sols notorious for being hard to get hold of and not knowing what's going on with the sale.0
