External USB drive dies!

I have a 160gb USB drive (partitioned into 3) plugged into a USB2 PCI card (no hub)

when I try to transfer a large file(s) £100mb+ it gets about halfway then all the lights on the drive go off, and a couple of mins later windows will tell me that the drive has become unplugged.

Anyone know why? and if it can be sorted?

Thats that theory blown out of the water then (assuming that the adapter is working).. Have seen similar symptoms if you don't power them properly, and just plug it into a usb port.

You could run chkdsk on it..
