Where can we go for a weekend within a 2 hour drive of Newport Gwent?

Hi All,
As it says on the tin.
I've asked roughly the same question a few times and always been given at least one great idea that we've used at that time and a few others we've noted down and used at other times.
Myself and the wife are looking to go somewhere for 2 nights starting Friday 22nd of January. Preferably somewhere with a half tidy shopping centre for the wife or close by to a city/town with one that we could get a train or drive to and a bit of nightlife (not clubs so much).
We fancied Bath but all the hotels look far too expensive. I'm only looking to spend £150 max for the two nights and looking at the deals around I can get quite a nice place for that in other locations.
Another place mentioned is Cheltenham but neither of us have been there so no idea what it is like.
Any ideas will be considered and none laughed at.
Thanks in advance

Ok, I can't promise that all my ideas will be within 2 hours drive but you can do that bit of the leg work

Cheltenham is lovely and quite good for shopping.
Bath really is worth it! (Bath WatersideTravelodge £76 per night per room)
Salisbury is lovely too.
Shrewsbury.
Birmingham - lots to do but not exactly all that attractive.
If you aren't too fussy about your accomodation, you could always stay in a Youth Hostel which would be the cheapest option apart from camping!
Just my opinion!0 -
Thanks for the reply. A few people I have spoken to have said the Cheltenham is a nice place and the wife fancies going there.
We've been to Bath for a few hours now and then and she loves it there.
I've never thought of Salisbury but will have a look.
Birmingham has come up a few times but I wouldn't know what area to stay in. We've been to the Bull Ring and Merryhill for the shops but thats about it.
If I took the Mrs to a youth hostel she would divorce me (could be an idea). We have a tourer but thought it would be a bit nicer to stay in a hotelI would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.0 -
Hi - you could try the Q chase hotel in brockworth which is a couple of miles outside cheltenham town centre - one of my favourite hotels & they have some good offers running at the moment if you go on there website. Have you looked on late rooms? Also have a look at olde english inns too we got a bargain there last year at the rising sun near cheltenham only £24 for 1 nights B & B for my husband, 2 year old & myself in a beautiful 4 poster room with amazing views - olde english inns always have offers on & have loads of places within a 2 hour drive. Parts of Devon are only 2 hours drive from Newport so you could try an inn there.. good luck0

Thanks for the replies. It looks like we are set on Cheltenham. I've had a look at hotels and also services apartments which is a route I've not thought of before. I don't know Cheltenham at all but a lot of the nicer places seem to me in the Montpelier area. Anyone know if there are bars etc here? We don't want to be too far from shops and restaurants but also don't want to be above a nightclub. I'm 32 and the wife's 27 but we are after a reaxing weekend rather than anything too hecticI would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.0
