I received a reminder to renew tax on car today. The car is now with my ex partner. He wanted to sign the car over to me last year and i signed the form, then decided i didnt want it in my name as he only wanted to do it as he thought it may be taken against some of his debts. However since we split i assume he has put the car in my name, although i have had nothing from DVLA to say this.Who does the car belong to and is it my responsibility to tax it.Really need some advice,i dont drive and have never had my own car so have no clue.thanks.

First thing to say is that registered keeper is not necessarily the same person as the owner. Difficult to say who the owner is.
If you have not received a replacement V5c with your name on it, you are probably not the registered keeper.0 -
the registered keeper is the person who is liable for taxing the vehicle suggest you speak to dvla and explain that you are seperated and he is the one who has the car they should tell you how to change it into his name contact them on 087024000100

To renew online you need either the reminder or the V5C, logbook to you and me.0

Are you saying that the tax reminder form (V11) has your name on it? If so then you are the registered keeper of this vehicle.
If you do not have the car in your posession then you will need to write to DVLA to inform them of this, it cannot be actioned via phone as they need a signature. In the letter quote the registration mark and make/model of vehicle (this will be on the V11 form) and state that you have never been the keeper of the vehicle and you would like your details removed as keeper and confirmation sent to you of this. Send this back to DVLA stapled to the V11 tax form. Keep a note of the registration mark for your records.
If the V11 tax reminder is in your ex's name but your address then you will still need to write to DVLA as above and ask for address to be removed.
Write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR. You can send by recorded or normal post.
You will receive confirmation within 4 weeks that the details have changed.

Just as importantly, the RK is responsible for all sorts of driving/parking misdemeanors, as you don't have/drive the car you must make sure that dvla don't keep you as the RK.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
