Glad to know I'm not giving out duff advice. :o

The only exception to this would generally be for brand new accounts and unusually large amounts for which 'additional deferment' is added to ensure the full 6 days are taken. This is just to protect the bank against fraud which is still reasonably common with cheques.

What would be classed as unusually large?

It would depend entirely on the conduct of the account, risk profile of the customer and usual credit turnover.

On one customer a cheque for £1500 would perhaps be enough whilst for another £50,000 would clear absolutely the same.

You've blown my cover, I was providing information given by yourself (about NatWest), except I left out the above which you stated.

Will probably have my "Thanks" taken away now.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

    Credit where credit's due.

For your information Barclays operate 2-4-6 on the accounts, however because of the way we have work as advisors and customers over the years when this was introduced it was too confusing to change the way we explained it to customers.
Depending on the account though you can draw on the funds the day the cheque is paid in. This is available to most current account holders. If you ask at the counter they will let you know whether your account has the uncleared facility.
I work for Barclays, however anything I say on this forum is not the official word of Barclays. I am only here to supply relevent information to assist.
