I have an Orange Live box router, wired to it is a PC on Vista and wirelessly connected is a laptop on XP. For the last two days the downloads on each have been ridiculously slow. I've been told by Orange to test my broadband speed which I've just done at 2331 kbps down and 448 kbps up load. Which apparently is good.

Can anyone else think of what the problem may be?

Cheers Adey. :D

Yes. You're using a mobile phone company for your broadband. You will get poor speeds during peak times which, at the moment with more people being stuck at home, could be 8am-midnight.

Personally, I'd change ISP. Orange are dire.

Agreed abysmal, but I've been with them for years and this is the first time I've had this particular problem.

it depends what programme are you downloading with, is it a browser or a p2p application, and also where you are downloading from. Also what is your speed supposed to be? Many things can affect broadband speeds and guessing at the problem will not help, more info is required

Have you tried simply rebooting the router by unplugging it? My AOL Netgear was ridiculously slow yesterday, the router was showing the connection at 992 down and 448 up. I rebooted it several times by going into the router and remotely resetting it but couldn't get better than 1088 / 448. Then today I tried physically unplugging it for 30 seconds, and hey presto, it reconnected at 6420 / 448.

You also have to be aware that those numbers you see have to be divided by 8, to give you your true upload and download at max, then you have to allow 80% of it so as not to bottle neck so while it may look like you are getting 2331kbs down, you are in fact getting more like 235kbs and 45kbs up at absolute maximum.

Sky I have heard do a good deal on sattelite and broadband packages...
