Freeezing attic room

Hi everyone, first post.

I live in a shared house and my bedroom is in the attic. It's my first winter in the rented property and I've found it's the coldest room in the house.

It's so cold that when I breathe I can see my breath and I'm sleeping in layers of clothes but still waking up numerous times in the night freezing.

I have gas central heating and one radiator in my room which eventually heats the room when the heating is on but the room doesn't keep the heat.

Have you got any tips of how I can keep the room warm?

Cold Amy

  • Loft rooms are warmest in summer and coldest in winter. Have you thought about using an oil rad to add extra heat?
  • what is the insulation like is there drafts round the window and door? if so you can buy sponge insutaion stuff in rolls that can help seal the gaps? What abouta draft excluder at the door? Have u got laminate, if so a large rug might help.
You could buy an electric blanket, there very safe these days, and are sold on the high street in shops like argos.

Would go with the electric blanket - we have them that you can keep on low all night if you need to.
  • Sorry no advice, but i feel really sorry or you, I hate being cold, it's horrible when you can't sleep because of it!!
Hope you manage to sort it out soon

is it warmer in the hall? leave your door open.

  • Thanks for all your replies. They've been really useful. I already have an electric blanket (best purchase of the last year!!) There doesn't seem to be any drafts, the place must be poorly insulated. I'll start with the cheaper options - extra duvet, draft excluder. Need to get something sorted, I can't blame frozen fingers and not being able to type on failing my final year of my degree! Apart from Argos and B&Q where else sells affordable oil radiators?

Nothing worse that being cold... oil filled electric radiator would be the best bet and not too bad on the running costs. I have used discounted heating .co.uk for heating stuff before. Good prices and service.
    Good luck.
  • I was in a b+m bargains the other week and they had a good size oil radiator for £20 and draught excluders for about £2. Have a look in 2nd hand shops see if you can get a pair of heavy lined curtains use 1 for your door and 1 for your window.
Have you told the landlord how cold it is? maybe they would be willing to fit a bigger radiator...?
