Linksys PAP2 VoIP with Sipgate - login problems & no ring or dial?

Hi guys,

I recently invested in a Linksys PAP2 VoIP phone adapter that I have been attempting to use in conjunction with my Sipgate.co.uk account however I'm experiencing some problems.

I've read several guides on the web as to how to set the PAP2 up, referred to Sipgate's own help files as well as several posts on the MSE forum and I have been getting there but I'm not quite there yet.

I've quite extensively configured the PAP2 with my Sipgate.co.uk details, I've changed the odd setting for example I've changed a string in the regional tab so that I can have a more British ringing tone etc..

The way I have it set up is it is connected directly to my router via an Ethernet cable, I have assigned it a static IP address, so it is connected fine to the router. I've added in other network settings such as DNS servers, gateway etc. I've opened the necessary ports in the routers port forwarding tab.

Now for quite some time (probably over a week) I had the PAP2 connected up to my router and it was running, it was connected to the Sipgate line so everything seemed to be working OK with regards to the PAP2 actually being connected to Sipgate.

However my cordless telephone a BT FreeStyle 2100 appears not to be compatible with the PAP2. I could not make calls out (no dial tone, nothing) nor could I receive calls (no ring, nothing).

I connected another cordless telephone.. an iDECT X3i and I was able to call out OK but I could not receive calls (no ring, nothing).

So anyway as I say everything was powered on for over a week and all seemed OK with the Sipgate server etc, was always connected then suddenly it would not connect.. Registration state: Can't connect to login server

Since then it started connecting again randomly, and now it will not connect again.

So it seems I have two problems.. the fact that sometimes it seems connected to the Sipgate server and other times it refuses to connect to the Sipgate server - I am not sure what could be causing this.. any ideas?

The other problem is obviously I need a telephone that is compatible with the PAP2, but of course it wouldn't ring or do anything when I tried to call the Sipgate line from another telephone.. now I have the telephone connected to the PAP2 with the telephone cable that was supplied with the PAP2.

I am led to believe that this is a US style telephone cable and I probably shouldn't be using it with the PAP2. Do I need some kind of special adapter cable for a regular BT telephone plug, to a US style telephone plug? If so could someone please send me in the general direction of what I need?

Hopefully someone can share a few pearls of wisdom with me. I'd love to get this working. Great premise behind it.

Thanks in advance :j

I've just restarted my router and now the Registration state of the PAP2 is: Online so I guess it seems to be "working" now and I guess periodically I'll need to restart the router if I have the login error problem again.

Now I just need some ideas on the not ringing issue.. could it be I need a BT socket to US style phone plug adapter? I've also read something about requiring a ring capacitor.

    Ideas? :D
