Help, I cant find this DVD rom driver

Hello and thanks for looking in on my problem :)

I'm installing windows 7 on an old Dell Latitude D600 laptop, although the Dell support site says that windows 7 is not compatable, it is actually do-able. A few people have reported to have it running with no problems.

I've started the instalation and as W7 is looking for device drivers on my laptop it asks for a disk because it cant find the device driver for the CD/DVD drive. I pop in the disk (self made) with what I think are all the drivers for the laptop but it cant find it.

I've been on to the Dell site and popped in my model number and searched through the drivers but it doesnt list a device driver for the DVD ROM drive I have.

I've tried googeling and have been looking for the best part of the last 4 hours and I still cant find a driver for this

5w299-A01

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

TIA

Debs

Having checked the Dell website, and some of my usual driver haunts, it appears Dell never released even a Vista driver for this device, nevermind Windows 7.

Wierd. I always thought versions of windows since XP were able to load generic drivers for a CD / DVD drive. One way round would be a cheapo external usb drive.

How did you load w7 ? By disc ,so your dvd/cd must be working.
Dvd/cd drives have used generic drivers included in windows for years.

Yes, I thought it would go on generic drivers but  and it wont let me skip that part, I have to quit the setup.

I'm going to download that tool Basil1234 has pointed me to, but I have a funny feeling that its going to say it can find the driver but its gonna cost me an arm and a leg if I want it

The system was 2nd hand so I have no idea where or what the Drive came out of or from :(

Is it an upgrade version of w7? Maybe it is looking for the prev. version of windows, eg. vesta .

It is an upgrade version I think, I have Ubuntu and XP on 2 partitions.

I was going to totally format and recycle the laptop - instead of buying one of those nice new netbooks :D

I've just used the Driver Robot tool to scan the system and it reports that the DVD ROM drive is a - HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8081N

Acording to that app the driver is up to date too

But the actual DVD ROM drive says its a 5w299-A01 :confused:I'm totally confused now

You appear to have a Hitachi-LG Data Storage GDR-8081N with customised firmware; in other words, it's been made specifically for Dell. Updates of any kind are thus highly unlikely.

Have you tried using an external DVD drive or USB stick to install Windows 7?

PS: I suggest you remove Driver Robot post-haste.
