Santander credit card

HD1 Posts: 28 Forumite
I have just applied online for a Santander Card for BT purposes.

On completeing the application I got a message stating a reference number for contact purposes, but no decision...not even let you know in 7-10 days, etc.

Any one else had similar experience with Santander application.

Waste of time. I applied in July and was accepted and still waiting.
  • There are threads on here and on the stooze web site about Santander being a waste of time. Wished I had read them before I applied last week! July, now that is shocking....

Lots of comments about web applications falling into the big black hole and people need to apply in the bank.

  • why oh why didnt I read this thread before applying ?. 3 weeks into the online process and everytime I ring I get a different story. From lost applications, to approved applications to applications still waiting for approval to them waiting for me to return a form which was never sent and back to my application still waiting approval!!! aarrrghhh !

What is going on ? Im stuck with a balance I need to transfer !

Ive not heard either but my credit file was searched by them on 22nd so I guess they are doing something :(
  • SimpyWimpy - can I just ask the date that you applied for the card ?

I rang customer services to ask them to give me an expected decision date and was told ring back in 2 weeks - anyone seen the film MoneyPit ?

Why does their website not explain that you dont have a snowballs chance in a sauna of hearing back within a month ? I'd have better luck building a Lego bridge and riding Lewis Hamilton bareback across it than getting a realistic idea of when this ordeal will be over :(
  • Hahaha, I must laugh at Santander. This has been going on for months. It is simply appalling for a multi-billion (insert any currency here) profiting organisation to have ZERO competency. I guess that's what the "Zero" stands for in their products.

Having said that, I was one of the lucky ones who applied online and was quietly given my Zero credit card after 6 weeks (this was back in October '09).
  • Oh my, thats unbelievable!

Serious question: how do they get away with this - are there no regulations that stipulate a maximum time that a bank has to make a decision?

If they take too long then people will apply for other cards, but too many applications could damage a persons credit rating, not to mention that if they had approved an amount, but had not informed you then that would add to the amount of available credit that you have, and so reduce your chances of getting another card.

I really am gobsmacked, why do they bother advertising this if they are already around two months behind on addressing peoples applications; spend less on marketing, more on application processing staff, and get a better reputation for customer service.

I don't think so. There are guidelines for what they should show before/during/after a lending application (banking code or something like that) but I don't think there is anything about timescales. Some do it in 10 seconds, some take 6 months... I could be wrong as I'm no expert here.

Watchdog might be a way to go; just coz there's a big mob of angry/confused consumers but it would need an expert to try and get some case against Santander. As I think about it, I was just inconvenienced (a lot) by Santander but I didn't lose out financially or anything like that.

I applied 16th December and had the agreement to sign and return by end of the month. I returned it and have since had a reminder and the original form with a direct debit form to sign. I sent it back today and was hoping to have the card by next Friday when I go on holiday.
