Getting rid of old Fireplace (set in concrete)

Am having trouble in getting rid of an old fire surround from a house we're moving into this weekend.
Its an old 50's type that is tiled but set in concrete with steel roads !!
Both my mum and dad loved it and said we should keep it ( harking back to their open fire days, I reckon
) , but obviously my other half wanted rid of it.Ripped it out and plastered the wall , looks great , more space.
Contacted my local council who said they wouldnt touch it at all and said if I took it to the local skip site in my car , it would be ok.It must weigh a ton , could just about walk it a few feet outside , couldnt lift it.No chance of getting it into a car.Renting a van this weekend to move in so asked if could take it in that , he said no.Said contact city council and apply for 1 day van permit etc.Cant really rent a skip as we are a mid terraced and no space to park outside , really.
Is there anyway of disposing of it in a van at all rather spending ages breaking it up and making X amount of trips in my car ?
Thanks

No! sorry but smash it up with a club hammer and cut the rods with an angle grinder . Dispose of lumps over the next few weeks .
Ps smashing the fireplace will at least keep you warm.0 -
as above or bury it in the garden.
dont laugh ive seen it done!Get some gorm.0 -
If it's intact you could try freecycle they might just be someone wanting a 'retro' fireplace.0

I currently have one of these in an old bath in the front garden!!! Its hidden by a bush so the neighbours cant see it. Parts of it have broken off and I am going to smash up the rest in to more manageable pieces.
Do your council offer a skip service? e.g. where they deliver a skip to a road and leave it there for an hour before moving on, much easier than going to the tip.0 -
At my local council dump householders can 'book' a van in...I always pop down and book it in person ie they give you a time slot and you provide the van Reg. It is to stop commercial or white van abuse...but allow householders using builders to get rid of one off loads.0

Why dont you contact a reclamation yard - They may even pay you for it?0

Is it one of these beige tiled ones? If it is I don't know who decided on ripping out a nice Victorian fireplace in my old house and replacing it with this type of monstrosity.
When I removed mine I just smashed it up with a sledge hammer.0
