Best travel insuracne for Easyjet Gatwick flight next week

Hi,

I am due to travel from Edinburgh-London Gatwick with Easyjet a week today, and return on the Sunday evening. Gatwick looks like it is closed for the second day running with all Easyjet flights showing as cancelled.

I am wondering what the best travel insurance for me is should the flights be cancelled. I know Easyjet will refund my flight but what about hotels, train tickets etc. Also in the event that I get there but not back, would any policy cover me for extra night's hotel stay, food, alternatie travel plans (eg taxi to luton/stansted and flight from there) etc?

I want to make it as stress free as possible as I know this weather is set to continue :(

Thanks, Jen

(Sorry for duplicate posts in different boards, not sure where I will get my answer)

I'd guess there would be some sort of exclusion if you take the policy out within a week of travel.

In any case, is this even necessary? If you get a refund for the flight and you can cancel a hotel room in advance of staying, what's the problem?

I think you might well be on dodgy ground taking out insurance now when as you say Gatwick is closed. You may very well not be covered. I'd comb any policies fine print to make sure you were.

It was more for if we ended up stuck in Gatwick for another night on the way home as we are on the last flight of the evening a week on Sunday. For the cost of food and hotel and transport from airport to hotel etc. But it seems the airline should/would cover all this? What about my taxi fare to/from Edinburgh airport if the flight doesn't even leave, that alone is £40 return and I am booked in the Easyhotel so I don't think they really do refunds for cancellations. Wouldn't travel insuracne cover things like that?

Travel insurance might or might not cover it.

It normally comes under the delay section - if your flight is delayed more than 12 hours (24 with some policies) you can cancel and reclaim all costs less the policy excess.

But I've seen it suggested that if the flight is cancelled rather than delayed they won't pay out.

And the cancellation section of the policy itself is unlikely to help - bad weather is not normally a heading under which you can cancel.
