The guy rang me last night and said I would be refunded by the end of the week.....so today. However, I've heard this before from him. Will give it til Monday before I press print on the letter! The hotel is The Mayville guesthouse, Edinburgh.0

Do you think he might have seen this thread then?
Maybe he means til the end of 'this' week (7 days). Give him til next Thursday for cleared payment then get the letter in the post regardless. If he pays in that time just ognore the letter. If he calls again asking for another week inore that and send the letter and get the ball rolling. At least if he does not pay you'll be a week into the demand rather than having to wait again and again.0 -
I'd talk to your credit card company quickly. They're jointly responsible with him. If nothing else they need to know what he's up to0

I've just looked at this Guest House on Tripadvisor and the review are mixed but there is mention of someone having to fight through the courts to get a deposit back.
Check it out...

If he's given you "by the end of the week" before, then I'd send the letter now.
Put a "if you have already paid this amount please ignore this letter" line on. Starts the 14 days sooner and gets the process rolling a little quicker.

Update on the situation: I phoned the credit card company on sat and filed a dispute with them which can take up to 2 weeks as, lo and behold, his promise to refund me yet again has failed to materialise. With any luck, the c/c company can retrieve the money!
Thanks for all the advice from everyone, it's greatly appreciated

SUCCESS!! My credit card company got the money back from the guesthouse, which is a relief as the guy had stopped answering my phonecalls! Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and encouragement on here I'am very grateful.
Now I intend to give the place a terrible review on as many websites as I can possibly find!0 -
Great job, well done Ess.0
