School closed. You have to make the time up in holidays!

Hi all,

Someone I know works for a primary school. Today and yesterday the school has been closed because of the weather, they have been told that because they are off they have to make the time up during the summer holiday, or they can try and come in if they don't want to do that.

Doesn't seem right to me, I know two other people that work at different schools who when asked have never heard of this policy.

What are your thoughts?

    Entirely fair.

Go in or make up the time.

i think its probably fair as the parents who have to stay off to look after the kids also have to make time up.

So why is [seemingly] no other school in the country adopting this 'entirely fair' policy?

Isn't it the gov that should decide this, not a middle manager at the school?

How do you know they arent? Its unlikely staff who choose just not to show up are getting free pay.

Secondly no it isnt. Its entirely upto management at the school. Situations will be different in each school.

The fact is you either make it to work and do your job, make up the time or take it as leave (if they allow)

You certainly cant expect to get paid to stay at home.

The idiots on these forums really are a bunch of scammers.

I have to admit I agree with 'some' of what has been said here.

I think parents would welcome this as no doubt it is causing childminding nightmares all over, but having the opportinuty to pay back the time instead of loosing pay has got to be a win win situation.

I thought schools wanted more local control, not to be ran from London!

Anyway, not docking pay and asking staff to make up the time seems entirely reasonable.

Failing that the staff can take annual leave?

Schools have a fair degree of autonomy on this sort of thing and I'm sure that the decision has been made by the Head. As they have been given a choice, it seems fair enough.

As I said in post #1 I know two other people that work at different schools who have not heard of this policy. So I disagree that it is a fact that all school employees get to work otherwise take leave or make the time up.

Secondly, you have contradicted yourself, you say it's a fact that everyone should make the time up or take leave, but you say the situation is different for each school and that management should decide.

Care to explain this before I report it?

You have taken a very general point of view whereby you see all jobs as the same. If I was to have a guess I'd say you have been directly (negatively) affected by the current situation. Perhaps a middle manager yourself that is trying to get a workforce in?

How would a closed school with full staff have a positive bearing on a parents childminding situation?

The school has been declared closed. That means no kids, but they are happy to have full staff in, i.e teachers, office/reception staff, kitchen staff (to cook what?), dinner ladies, cleaners etc.

    Yawn..........

Staff could quite easily do work without kids.

Why did I even bother wasting my time responding to a troll such as you. I should of spotted it earlier but it wasn't until I've just seen your [closed] thread where you talk more nonsense that warrants a moderator having to follow you around locking your threads.
