My work transport is a rear wheel drive Dennis Vulture, commonly known as a dustbin wagon and we remove the contents of recently "vacated" council houses. The majority of these are on council estates which are outside of the travelling remit of gritters. The only way that we have managed to keep moving this week is by using two rolls of stair carpet under the rear (drive) wheels. Once the tyres are on the carpet, it is easy to reach 5 or 6 m.p.h. which has got us out of the brown stuff and more importantly with no sideways drift. I've now put a couple of 6 foot rolls in the boot of my car just in case I have any probs on any ESSENTIAL journeys that I am forced to make. When rolled up, they are only about 8 inches in diameter so don't take up too much space, (unless you drive a Smart car).
From personnal experience, woven backed carpet works better than foam backed.0 -
I'd have though you could push the Smart Car out of the car park?? It's not that heavy! I've pushed heavier this week! The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

Yep, this 45 year old woman had a good go at pushing her daughter's Smart car but found the 'Ice melting' stuff and the cardboard boxes helped!
I'll have a look out for some Hessian backed carpet.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

I certainly wouldn't reccomend jamming rope in yours doors and tying to the matts if the rope becomes entwined around the axle - could cause all sorts of havoc :rotfl:0

Oldish thread resurrected.
Just cut up a few bits of old carpet to take with you, grips better than rubber mats.0 -
I'm a oil tanker driver & last month got stuck in a customers property. My solution was to borrow all of his doorstep mats to use:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: It got me traction on the ice, the only problem was i would have had to do a 5 point turn to turn round, so i reversed out of the problem area & into a small turning not designed for lorries & put a 8'' deep wheel track in his prized lawn, but hey ho i was out:Dif i had known then what i know now0
