Hi There I wanted to know if a cctv camera that monitors bus lanes at junctions. Also be used as a red light traffic camera to monitor the lane next to it or only the bus lane, or is it only the gatso type cameras that are allowed?

Only gatso type camera detect red light runners.
Other cameras are either ANPR or most commonly MVD (microwave Vehicle Detector) which are used on roads below 35mph.
Both are located on top of the traffic signal head or separate pole.

I assume your talking about white cctv cameras that are used to monitor roads and junctions, that are used for traffic situations.

Im not sure if these can also be used for traffic light purposes.

can anyone else shed light on this?

No they will not be used for red light offences. Gatso cameras with induction loops are used for RL running.

CCTV can be used for other offences such as illegal U turns, stopping inside Yellow boxes and red lights. It all depends if someone sees you and decides to do you for it.

I was under the impression CCTV used for traffic offences were run by the council, and they can only issue tickets that can only be dealt with with a fine. Red light/speeding require penalty points which councils cannot give out..

    Might be wrong though ..

You could be right, but would a council refer it to the police, As im sure they have other cameras that they monitor?

    Don't know does anyone else?

Just looked on the web can't see if a bus lane camera can also be used as a red light camera, only that they just catch out naught motorists using the bus lane only. at periods of the day they are not suppose to.

    what do others say?
