Paint for plaster

Hi there

Have bought a load of Dulex Vinyl matt for my newly plastered walls, and have been looking for some non vinyl paint to dilute and put down the first coat.

However I popped into Crown decorating centre today and they recommended an obliterating paint that can go direct onto plaster and say it is a lot less hassle, only needing two coats on plaster.

What do people think?

I could do without the hassle of watering down paint and doing loads of coats.

Obliterator is thick paint and an expensive way of going about prepping new plaster. The point of a mist coat is that the new plaster will suck moisture out of the paint like crazy so the mist coat is applied to seal the surface and prevent that happening.

Use any contract matt or Supermatt for your mist coat. Do not use standard Dulax retail Rich Matt. It doesn't stick to new plaster!

How long has the plastering been finished?

Have you bought retail spec Dulux or Trade spec? If its Trade Vinyl Matt its designed to be thinned. 10 - 20% for the second coat and prolly 5% or neat for the final coat.

If you can't be bothered with thinning or applying more coats of paint than two then the finish won't be so great - the secret of a great finish with any paint is the prepwork. But its your plaster and your paint.

    Cheers

Yes I bought retail Dulux matt. I dont understand the difference between trade and retail paints, it seems very confusing?

The chap in Crown Trade decorating centre, swore this obliterating paint is the best, because it is water based. If the plaster sucks the water out of it, it does not matter and would not crack. He said the only down side was if you wiped it with a wet cloth it would come off.

He said all of the developers on the new builds use it and he supplies two large magnolia, and one large white tin per three bed house.

Trade spoec is better paint but not so eeasy to use for someon ehwo is not used to it. It gives better coverage and goes further as well.

He's either a muppet or he's havin' a larf! All emulsion paint is water based and new plaster will suck water out of all water based paint. Thats why you do a mist coat!

He's correct and supermatt is the same. Its a prep paint not for final finish.

Was that statement supposed to impress you?
