Charity doorstop collections

Just got a quick question abotu charity collections, should charity ask for bank details on the doorstep ? im under the impression that they shouldn't. Reason i ask is my nan has either or knows someone who has been aproached by a person asking for bank details to make donations. Ive given her the number for non emergency police, red cross who the collecter said they were from.

I don't know whether it was right or not but she's not the only one. Red cross and many others used to knock on our door where we used to live. If anything so annoing but they want to come into your house and set up a donation direct debit. Not a very good way to get donations in my opinion.

"Chuggers" as they are known regularly go round in groups in town centres trying to get people to sign up for direct debits so it is common, although I haven't come across door knocking before. A friend of mine once tried to give them a fiver, they couldn't take it as they were only geared up to take bank details.

Agreed it doesn't reflect well on the charity.

Yes, they can ask for bank details, but need to show ID and state who they are working for and, if asked, how much of the donation will go to the charity and how much to the fundraiser.
As I constantly point out on the Charities Board, people need to consider the financial position of the charity before they donate. Don't be bamboozled into donating unless you are happy that the charity is well run and that your donation will be properly used. For this reason, I never give to chuggers or tin rattlers - and my day job is advising charities on fundraising.

  • I also suggest , giving rice to a badly run charity instead of cash , that will stop them bothering you , esp when they spend 30% of income on Admin costs

You may want to check with the Local Authority. Some Licensing Depts provide permits to Door to Door Direct Debitors. They could give you details.
