DDR RAM Compatibility

Hi,

I have a Dell Diminsion 3000 which is running 512mb (2x256) of DDR ram (pc3200) - i ordered 2GB of ram (2 x 1Gb) as I run a lot of power sapping apps.

I swapped them over last nite and the unit just bleeped at me from the CPU and didnt even power up?

Anyone know where I have gone wrong? I checked plenty of sites and the pc is meant to handle 2gb of ram and they fitted into the slots correctly?

Please Help>

Try http://www.crucial.com/, theres a compatibility tool you can use to find the correct type for your PC!

  • if its just bleeping then theres one of two reasons
    1) its not fitted properly
    2) the memorys knackered

    Thanks

    I did check crucial and it said I needed "DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 128Meg x 64"

which I thought I had ordered but reading the listing again on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=103001152191&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

looks like its not compatible with my motherboard?
  • Last time I bought RAM for a DELL owned by a relative, which I will be the first to admit was some years ago, it turned out that DELL insist you use their own RAM and you had to buy it through them at literally twice the price.

I tend to build my own PCs so the generic stuff has always worked fine for me. Dunno if this is still the case, you should really speak to DELL tbh, see if they are still screwing suckers over when it goes to upgrades. I cant believe they still do, how would they get away with it?! Why would anyone buy a DELL if they did but worth finding out for sure perhaps...

Dell can 'insist' whatever they like. If you're still under warranty and something goes wrong, you may run into problems if you've upgraded it yourself. However, they can't force you to get memory from them and other branded memory should work absolutely fine as long as it's fully compatable.

nickmack is right in that Dell cant force you to use their ram.

we use Dells at work and have just recently upgraded the memory in one or two PCs. The tool at Crucial is good to help identify what type you need, then buy the memory on a site such as ebuyer or misco.
