Making a will

While shopping in our local town centre the other day I was stopped by a young lady offering free home visits from a will writing firm. This firm would draw up a will for me for £29. I do need to make a will but would you suggest I use a will writing firm or a solicitor.

These companies usually charge a low fee and make money by taking a percentage to administrate the estate on your death. Depending on how complex your estate is, your beneficiaries may be able to deal with this themselves, and not pay the fee.

I would look carefully at the charges, and see if they insist on being named executor/ co-executor.

Personally I would avoid these sort of companies like the plague. If you have a large estate - that may make Inheritance likely - use a Solicitor - without a doubt. If not then just writing your wishes on a piece of paper, signing it and having your signature witnessed by two other people( (not beneficiaries) will suffice. Make sure you let someone know where you keep it though - when the time comes - what a sobering thought.
