paying deposit for boiler

My mum has just been quoted £1200 for replacing her boiler. The plumber is going to put in a Gledhill unit which he says he can not get from local suppliers and has asked for a £800 deposit in advance. Is this normal/reasonable?

I would get atleast two other quotes from reputable Corgi regsitered plumbers. One good source to find a reputable tradesman of any discipline is to look at the Guild of Master Craftsman web site https://www.findacraftsman.com
All members of the Guild are vetted and need to prove they are adequatley insured. Also by using a Guild member you have a fall back on the Guild if you are disatisfied with the standard of work carried out.
Hope this helps.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

sounds like the deposit is for the boiler cost http://www.gasapplianceguide.co.uk/gledhill_he_condensing_boiler.htm our plumber is on a 'fit only' contract. We pay more to use him but buy the stuff ourselves, cheaper than he can get it usually.0

Thanks very much for these replies. The appliance guide site is very useful as I had been trying to find out how much these boilers actually cost. The other site is also useful to know about.0
