Current account for 78 yr old.

My mum in now on her own and 78 years old. She wants to open a current account that gives her a cheque book - for sending chqs to grandchildren for Birthdays etc. She does not want an overdraft and it would be funded by her state pension and odd chqs she receives as present. i was looking at a basic current account but these dont seem to offer the chq book facility she wants. Any advise on what is the best account would be much appreciated.....

Have you thought of HSBC - they offer a Bank Account and Basic Bank Account. Altough their website doesn't mention a cheque book - they are available upon request

I know you don't want a 'full' current account, but I would suggest the Co-Op's Current Account. It comes with a cheque book, debit card etc, and you don't need to have an overdraft on it, so it can be treated kind of like a basic account. Another perk is that she would be able to deposit cash and cheques through her local Post Office.

The Co-Op also does a basic account, Cashminder, but according to the website it doesn't come with a cheque book. I'm not sure if any basic accounts come with a cheque book.

I would suggest that rather than the account itself for her it may be more important that the bank is convenient for her and she can speak to someone locally if she needs it.
