Some advice please!

Just a quick one....

My Nan (well she is my hubby's but I call her mine as I don't have any of my own anymore) is 79 years old and I would say, pretty fit for her age! She does so much for herself and heard about a local gym offering a package of £16 per month for over 60 yr olds. So she thought she would find out what they had to offer!

So.... off she goes down there and "a lovely lady" shows her around etc... and shows her all of the equipment and thought it was just what she wanted for a few days a week and joined for 16 weeks. Signed a contract and set up a direct debit etc.. well that was about 4 months ago and she thought it was getting a bit much and would not renew her contract. BUT the next payment came out and when she checked the contract 'just in case' it seems she signed a contract for 36 MONTHS!! Obviously she is kicking herself about it but am I wrong in thinking, I cannot believe there are even gym memberships for 3 years, let alone for a lady who is approaching 80 YEARS OLD??!!!!!!

I have told her to cancel the DD and will try and get some advice on it. She is obviously kicking herself with this as she wouldn't normally do something so silly but I feel they 'tricked' her into this contract!

Any advice?

Just ring them up and say she had a stroke and died. Tell them you'll forward a copy of the death certificate in the post. They'll most probably say there's no need for that.
  • Really? LOL, it did cross my mind to say something along those lines but I felt too harsh to suggest it to her as she is in a panic with it?!

    Thanks for your reply!
  • I'd phone them, tell them she has sustained an injury that appears to be as a result of not being shown how to use a machine properly at her age/medical condition and that she is seeing a specialist, who has asked for copies of all the medical screening and induction documentation, together with evidence to demonstrate that the instructor was qualified in elderly care fitness issues and that the gym insurance covers people of her age...

and by the way, the direct debit has been cancelled, which is perfectly OK in the circumstances, isn't it? Without any comeback? Oh, and your name is....?

Then cancel it at the bank and you haven't said anything that you may feel a bit uncomfortable with/is tempting fate.

They're unlikely to press the matter.
