Hi
Im due to exchange contracts on Friday on my first home (fingers crossed!). The solicitors have told me that the current owner has their gas with british gas and the electricity wiyth Swalec. I really havent got a clue where to start. Do I have to stay with the current providers? If not what type of things should I be looking for in a good deal?
Thanks for your help.

Yes when you move in you will start getting your energy from the current suppliers. You are free however to change supplier at ant time, even as soon as you move in.
It does take up to 6 weeks for the change to complete so you would be with the existing ones for that period,
Your best bet is to go on one of the comparison sites to see if there are better deals. You need to know what your usage will be, perhaps you could ask the old occupiers what they used. To give you a clue the average is about 3500kwh electric and 21000kwh gas, but I do not know anything about your house or how you use things.
Just one thing though when you inform BG and swalec that you have move in they will try to put you on their standard tariff which will be their most expensive.
Do not forget to read your meters when you move in and keep the readings safe.0 -
As above but make sure on day one call the existing companies with your meter readings and register with your details. Also make sure you dont sign up to 'other' tariffs as they may charge you to move to another supplier.0
