Credit Balance on Credit Card

Thought I had my finances slowly going in order! Saved up money to pay off my HSBC Credit Card Balance :T and then planned to transfer over my balance from my Mint Card as there was a promotional balance! All was okay, til the lady from HSBC said I could not go ahead with the balance transfer as my balance was in credit by £35.50 and it would take up to 11 working days for this to clear/transfer to my current account - after which the balance offer would not be valid! She advised me to call back after 15 working days to see if I would be able to activate the promotional rate! How unfair!! I know it wasn't her fault, but for £35.50, why could they not minus that from my balance transfer and secondly, if it was such a credit balance is such a big issue, why do they not deal with it in the first instance. I know for a fact that if I did not call HSBC to do the balance transfer, they would not have got in touch with me to refund the money - it would have just sat there! GRRRRRRR. It was only in credit as my minimum payment went out just before I paid off the balance in full and also I accounted for any additional interest.

There goes my plan to start off the year on the right foot! Has anyone else had any problems like this.

Really need advise on how to pay off my debts super quick. Will post another advice-wanting post. Thanks for reading and any advise will be appreciated on this.

Wouldn't it be quicker/more convenient to spend your way out of the dilemma?

Why not use your HSBC card for essential shopping (eg. food) that you would have bought anyway? Then contact HSBC, once again, and request your BT from Mint.

Nice idea but a bit impractical - unless you spend exactly £35.50, you'll either still be in credit or end up with a small interest-bearing balance which can't be paid off because of the BT

Well, anybody that shops regularly in a particular supermarket, already knows the prices of those foods purchased regularly.

I've just added up some of my food bill and arrived at the required figure fairly quickly.

Not an ideal solution, but if time is of the essence, this has got to be quicker than waiting for a refund and almost certainly missing the deadline for a low-cost balance transfer.

Buying something like fuel as has been suggested sounds sensible.

Just wondering if you could also try to do the balance transfer via internet banking?

    Great idea!
Got Halifax Classic to reduce my interest rate by 5% woohoo - 10/06/08 Thanks MSE!
    Another 3% shaved off 10/12/08
    ANOTHER 4 % June 09:beer:
  • Thanks so much everyone - I didn't even think of spending the money, which would have sorted the issue more or less straight away. I hate Banks!!! They had already "started" the transfer when I spoke to them - missions.
  • Loved the Fuel idea! Will definitely start using the forum more regularly from more advise from all of you smart people xx
