Boiler question

Hi,

I am thinking of taking advantage of the government boiler scrappage scheme but wondered if anybody knew from experience how much per year I would save roughly. The gas companies are quoting aroung £200 per year is this true? Or are they over exageratting.

Cheers:beer:

I'd say that's a very optomistic estimate. Even if it stacks up, a new boiler will cost you at least a couple of grand including installation - more if you want a decent one. So you'll take 10 years to pay for it, ignoring the cost of capital.

Make no mistake - this boiler scrappage scheme is the government using our taxes to buy our votes. They're trying to get look concerned for the environment, when they're really just concerned for the election.

If you're buying a new boiler for the environment, factor in the CO2 contribution from the boiler manufacture, the fitter's transport, power tools and soldering, the new copper piping you'll need etc. etc. etc. Normally the most econimical and ecological thing to do is to cut back on production of new goods and use the old ones till they fall apart.

Forgot to say - I spent £4000 on a fancy new boiler a year ago. I did a loft conversion, so there's more house to heat, but the gas consuption is pretty close to identical to the old one.

I might hang fire give that advice. I had a feeling they were over estimating the savings but had no idea by that much!

What make/model of boiler do you presently have? A lot of people will be conned into scrapping good boilers when they dont need to and ending up in a worse situation if they are not careful!
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • My current boiler is a baxi bermuda 401 boiler. It seems Ok and fairly reliable. I'm paying out around £1200 per year for a 3 bedroom terraced house.

The baxi 401 appears to have an efficiency of 65%. Modern condensing boilers efficiency is likely to be in the lowish 90%, if we say 95% then in theory you should save 30% on your heating costs.
To offset this of course you have to factor in the cost of installing the new boiler.
