Hi there,
The hard drive on my dad's PC died a couple of weeks ago. We've replaced it, reinstalled Windows (XP) and got everything more or less back to normal, except:
The microphone input on the front of his box doesn't want to work. The USB and headphone sockets next to it work fine, as does the mic input on the sound card round the back. I can't find any options to change it on the Control Panel either.
Anyone got any ideas where I should be looking? It worked fine before the hard drive died.
Thanks in advance.

Is it possible the connection to the front port got detached while the hard drive was being replaced?
It would be worth opening the case and tracing the connection from the socket. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
yes, depending on where the sound feeds into could be a number of things.
if its a dedicated panel that is part of / directly connected to a sound card worth checking connections to the soundcard and perhaps playing with updating sound card drivers/associated software.
if its part of the case and/or wired down to the motherboard again check the wire is connected and look what sound driver the on board motherboard sound needs/update if needs be.
also worth checking (probably quite early on) is if there are different sound inputs listed within windows control panel > sound menu and the right one is selected0 -
Just check : go to control panel, system, Hardware Tab, Device Manager.
Is there anything listed with a yellow exclimation mark.0 -
Drivers req. for the sound card and external control unit (Ext. mic. input) Creative perchance?0

Thanks! Got it. Did a driver update and the "Alternate Microphone" tick box has now reappeared.
Cheers, all!0
