Benefits and 0845 numbers

  • It can also take several attempts to get past the automated 'sorry call back later too busy' message. If ringing from a mobile you can lose a couple of quid b4 you even get put on hold. I now usually go to my local Jobcentre to use their phones for free. Not a great solution for everyone though as it depends how far away the Jobcentre is from you.

If you have a bt line have you considered option3(think thats the one)£4.95 a month and 0845 and 0870 numbers free as are all 01/02/03,the only extras are mobiles(which are cheaper than usual and premium numbers 0844 or 09
We don't have a landline (on virgin anyway...LL sorts it al out as its bills inc.) so only option is mobile or phonebox

What phone service are you on??
If BT then have there anytime call plan with line rental and paperless billing about £17.20 a month. Then push for 3 months free call plan, worth about £18 discount. You have to take out a contract with them though for minimnm 12 months i think.
All national numbers including 0845/0870 free all day everyday, except mobiles and premium rates.
Alternative is when you ring the DWP ask them to call you back.
    Hope this helps

If you can get to your local job center you can use their phones and contact them for free. I presume its the same everywhere? If not perhaps it would work out cheaper to write to them. Good luck.

Yes, they will let you use their phones. Assuming they work and some chav hasn't ripped them off the wall or otherwise made them unuseable.

However, "local job center" can mean quite the bus journey for some people. 12 Miles, £5.40 in bus fare for a return here, when I was still claiming JSA. Now... much like the 0845 number you have to call they won't reimburse you for that. They say they will, but they won't. Seriously, they won't.

So you've got to get your math head on. Is travel to site to use freephones more or less than the phone bill your racking up?

If calling for tax credits, instead of 0845 300 3900, it's free up to 1 hour on Virgin (not sure about BT) if you use 01355 359007.

I'm lucky that way. Phone line is TalkTalk. Unlimited calls. I pay £20 odd quid per month for calls and net.

Gone are the days in a pay box
