Firsrtly, if your system is XP the basic checks are in Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance. Here are the two to use
Disk clean up (Free up space on your hard disk)
Disk Defragmenter (Rearrange items on your hard disk)
Other problems could be associated with the amount of work your CPUis having to do, how may programs run automatically at start up, how many run when not required.
Start up list reduction
This link http://teamtutorials.com/windows-tutorials/remove-items-from-windows-xp-startup
Is a step-by-step guide.
CPU usage
This is accessed by pressing simultaneously Control, Alt, Delete.
At the bottom you will see CPU usage %. If it is extremely high then it could mean that too many applications or processes are running. I would suggest looking at the processes tab. Is there anything in the CPU column that shows a consistently high number? Consider with a web-search on thename.exe in column 1, if you are not sure.
One regular hog is the Indexing Service, which supposedly makes windows searches faster. It can do the opposite and also has been known to cause problems elsewhere e.g optical drives. I suggest disable it.
This is an extract from a link
Disable the Indexing Service in Windows XP- Open “Control Panel”, select “Administrator Tools”, and open Services applet. Alternatively, type services.msc in the Rn text box from Start menu, and then hit Enter.
- Scroll down and locate Indexing Service service, and then double click on it.
- Click on Stop button to immediately stop the indexing service if the service status shows “Running.
- Under the “Startup Type”, select Disabled to permanently disable the indexing service so that it won’t run again.
- Click OK.
I hope this may be of assistance, at lest for XP, though for Vista and 7 the process may vary.

From the start button in the box that says "search files or folders" or "run" type in MSCONFIG
Open MSCONFIG and you will see a number of tabs with the end one saying STARTUP
Select this and uncheck everything apart from your virus/anti-malware programmes and windows. ... reboot ...if a message says "You have made changes etc...tick the box to 'do not display this message agan' and your done.
This always results in a faster boot up as programmes (especially things like i-tunes and quick time) load at start up when really you only need them to load, well, when you need them!
You need to check this on a regular basis as some programmes believe they are so useful that everytime you use them they will re-load their 'launch at startup' command and eventually your PC will start slowly again.0 -
Very true: it's so easy to also click the wrong radio button, when asked if to be pinned to Startup. IMO this is where WinPatrol is good. If it detects a configuration change, it warns you and asks confirmation. Also has delayed start facility, so that only the essential essentials are loaded, and the others when that is done.Strangelybrown wrote: »You need to check this on a regular basis as some programmes believe they are so useful that everytime you use them they will re-load their 'launch at startup' command and eventually your PC will start slowly again.0
