If you're actively seeking work (and not running a gardening business) then you should be eligible to claim means tested JSA of £64 per week and help with your mortgage interest payments and council tax.

Is your gardening business formally set up?
Thankyou. Yes it is registered, we are in third year, but has slowed a great deal in last year. My husband is considering doing something else. He was prison officer before, so is limited in experience0 -
Didn't want to read and run and just to let you know we are finding things very difficult what with my hubby being self employed and also have 3 children to feed and clothe.

Hi how about a rubbish removal service . Ask local estate agents/landlords if they have properties that need clearing out.
How about adapting your van to take animals. A service that takes animals to the vet would be a good idea. Lots of people dont have transport and public transport wont always take animals.0 -
Oh believe me I've been looking. There is nothing around as I'm sure you must realise. Am actually enquiring about courier work, as we have the van, if anyone knows anything, it would be appreciated. I am new to this forum, well any forum actually, so thankyou for all of your advice.
When you are self employed and running a business, it isnt as simple as just signing on when times are slow.
My friend runs a gardening business.....mostly lawns......but cant sign on when he is slow, so he turns his hand to all those winter jobs that can be so lucrative.
You can clear driveways and paths of snow and ice.....so long as you dont charge silly prices people will be glad of your services.
Window cleaning, gutter cleaning, wheely bin repairs and cleaning.....you can turn your hand to odd jobs. Loads of things.
ETA Just seen that you do a lot of these already.
Have you tried to do a feedback on your customers to find out what they think/thought of you and if they no longer use you, why?
It could be that someone is undercutting a lot of the time, which you might be able to compete with, and they might not just be giving up their gardener.
Feedback will help you to know if you are doing a good job too. Drop in some feedback forms to past customers with a deal on for jobs at winter.....as a thank you, you can add a discount vouchur for work later in the year (Autumn time) That why you get a small job now, a bigger job later and some valuable feedback.0
