does anyone know if I can

1. Buy the A Rated Boiler myself (which costs around £800 pound less than Ive been quoted)

2. Get a Certified Gas registered (Corgi) person to swap out.

And still claim the £400 Voucher back ??

Doing it this way will save a Bomb..:D

Or does he have to supply and fit.. ?

Have you read the MSE thread and the link to the EST website. That tells you if your boiler is elligble and how to claim. It mentions getting a quote from an 'installer' and 'installer having completed work'. This is probably aimed at stopping people pocketing the money.

I've not done any calculations but my gut feeling is that you will have to wait a long time to recover the cost of a new boiler.
I had a chat to a British Gas guy last year about the possibility of changing my old Ideal Classic for a new boiler and he doubted if I'd ever save any money by changing it ( they do have popular prices mind:D)
Probably a better bet than Solar Water heating though.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Its not so much about pocketing the money its about not getting ripped off by an 'installer'. Have you had a quote from an 'installer' yet? :rotfl:

Will any installer quote less than £2600 to remove an old G rated boiler and supply and fit a new A rated one?
I doubt it  . But if so I may be interested in the scrappage scheme.

Is my following input a load of ***** because personal financial savings may be difficult to estimate?

How will the price of gas change in future? A big unknown.
Based on todays price my calculations show between 20% and 25% savings by going from my 70% G rated boiler to a new 90% A rated boiler.
My gas bill is currently £1200 per year so I might save between £240 and £300 per year.
In 10 years I'd save between £2400 and £3000 but immediately lose any interest on that amount say at 2.5% net per annum, a total on between £672 and £840 over the 10 years.
So 10 year savings would be between £1700 and £2200.
Add £400 scrappage allowance and 10 year savings would be between £2100 and £2600.

I was in a similar thought to you that going from a G rate 70% effeciency to an A rate >90% effeciency should give 15-20% cost saving in energyt use, but I don't think that is the case in practice, prolly your old unit has a pilot like mine, whereas a current unit will be stuffed with electronics just waiting to go wrong,in standby a newer unit will obviously use less, but when in heat mode, it wasn't clear that the units used less gas to provide the same amount of heating (laws of physics n all that) I was having a chat with a boiler mfr this afternoon, told him I'm not interested in the BSS, after a while he said if it ain't broken don't fix it, as you will NEVER retrieve the cost of a boiler back.

What the Government giveth with one hand it taketh away more with the other.
e.g. if removal of old boiler plus supply, install & fit of a new boiler costs £2300, more than the £400 government subsidy will be obtained by VAT at 17.5%.

This is an interesting article about gas boiler types: http://www.muswell-hill.com/foxandco/pages/boilertypes.htm

You're right - it won't. Unless you change the entire system - including pipework and radiators - the boiler will never go into condensing mode, so you won't even see a big part of the potential improvement.

The only reason to replace a boiler is if it breaks beyond economic repair, or it's so old the parts are no longer available. Just get it serviced regularly, so it's safe and working as well as it can. This is what two different gas fitters have recommended to me.

thanks for the replies,, Think I'll stick with My G Rated Working boiler..

Hot water is a bit slow coming on during the winter but other than that it works fine..

A service is probably required... though,.,

Definitely get it serviced if it's not been done for more than a year. I had mine done recently and it only cost £30 + vat. That included a printout of it's emissions and performance too. When you consider the cost of a new boiler, treating your old one with TLC is a no-brainer.
