Try and help me figure this out...

People are complaining about this snow saying "it's global warming, it's global warming".....

Hang on a minute...I thought we were in Winter? You know, you see snow on Christmas cards and we've finally got it and all people can do is complain and say it's global warming (Which isn't even real but don't get me started on that).

Anyone else think I'm being a grumpy 22 year old? Or do you agree?

  • I agree with you. Global warming is a load of rubbish to be honest.
My mums said that all were getting is the weather they had when they were younger and that was well before all the global warming cr!p.

Thank you. I'm glad i'm not the only one thinking this. The only bit I'm annoyed at is that I want to go sledging...but DD is only 1 and is a little unsure of the snow so We're going for a "walk" today. More like a slid on our bums.

I dont think its global warming although I believe it does exist. Its just winter - dec to feb = very cold. Being a youngster, you have probably got used to mild, wet winters. This is how it should be.

Lets hope theres no snow in april again this year!

  • Don't know how old the first posters are, except the one who's 22, but this is a 'normal' winter. The fact you haven't seen one (because our winters are notably warmer and wetter than the used to be) is actually evidence FOR the existence of climate change!

    Couldn't agree more.

Exactly what the weatherman on BBC 6o'clock News said last night, along with the explanation of why it's cold right now (high pressure diverting warm wet air from Gulf Stream over to southern Europe, so we're getting Siberian weather from the East).

Yes, but you are probably too young to remember that winter was ALWAYS like this before 1985! When I got married to my ex-oh in March 1984, there was snow lying on the ground in the wedding photos. During the winter of 1986/7 I can remember pushing my DS1's proper pram to the clinic through snow & ice for about 2 months.

Global warming is real in my opinion and is a very dangerous threat and shouldn't be ignored. One explanation is that the uk is being blown by a Siberian breeze instead of the usual warm air we get from the gulf stream. Another is that we are currently entering in a phase of global dimming (according to Patrick Stewart) which means less sun and less heat.

I know what you mean floss i'm 27yrs old and we haven't had a winter this bad (well in Middlesbrough) for about 9 years. In the 80's and early 90's our pipes would burst every year without fail., such fun smashing ice and waiting for the council to turn up with water for everyone and hours of waiting for it to be fixed.
I was explaining to my boys yesterday that although we have snow it still is not as cold as it was last year, when it was in fact TOO COLD to snow. I mean come on people yes it winter it lasts from December to February this is nothing to what it was like when i was a child. The first year my son was born i had to carry him with two foot of snow to buy milk.

Enjoy the snow while its here, i know we have since the 18th Dec and were hoping its going to be here for the weekend so we can go sledging again.
  • I think it's wonderful and how winter should be! It's years since we have had snow like this and although it does cause disruption I think it's better than loads of rain.

I don't buy the whole global warming thing either. Every year when we get a heatwave, they bang on about the temperature and trot out the whole global warning doom monger line then proceed to tell you its the hottest summer since 1919, 1925, 1934 etc. So if GW is the problem now what was the problem then............

I think it's not that fact that this is the weather we've been used to from years ago but more the fact that we haven't had it for so long as milliebear00001 stated and then sundenlly BAM 2 waves of heavy-ish snow within 1 month of eachother.

This could be an effect of global warming, an effect of a slight polar shift but not as catatclysmic as per the Mayan Prophecy of 2012, could be a sign that we are not far of a ice age!!

There is such a thing as Global Cooling too but I don't know too much about it!

But global warming isn't about isolated years. It's about patterns in the weather. We are seeing a pattern of increasingly warm and wet weather in our country. This doesn't mean you won't get the odd year where that's not the case. Conditions in other parts of the world are changing in different ways. We have had patterns of very cold, dry winters and warm, dryish summers for hundreds of years - the fact that weather patterns show this to no longer be generally the case is what's concerning people.
