British Gas have sent me a cheque but because of their incompetence in management of my account they have still got the account in Joint names, I solely pay for the bills and the amount they sent me could come in handy seeing as my Ex left me in the !!!!!! so to speak financially.
The cheque they sent me is addressed to both of us on the heading of the letter but the actual cheque is in my ex's name if I were to take all proof of who I was to HSBC including my gas bill's etc would they let me cash this cheque other wise I will have to wait over 35 days..
fustrated

At a guess it may have been your ex that was assessed for the Essentials tariff. I would suggest sending it back with a covering letter to take his name of the account. You should then contact the Essential team to make sure that if it was you that was claiming the lower Tariff that your service needs are updated.
If you have a PP meter the cheque can be cancelled over the phone and sent to the meter.
HSBC will not cash the cheque for you.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0 -
bummer the essentials tarriff has only been in place since he left, it is their incompetence that has failed to remove him. so even though it is a joint account i wont get anywhere
i dont have prepay or i would have done that

The Essentials has been available since 2008. As this is the only reason that you will have been sent a cheque your property must be on the lower tariff. If this is incorrect please call/write and get this corrected.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

Now I am more awake I can reply properly.
I was placed on the essentials tarriff just after my ex left in 2008 due to me being on the qualifying benefit, I advised British Gas in December 2008 that my ex husband had left the property, and they amended the system accordingly or so they said, I got my next bill still addressed to both of us so I phoned to correct this error only to be told the system had already had the ammended details.
fast forward to this year, following further hassles from my ex he is no longer allowed to contact me as there is a restraining order. British Gas still have not ammended the system as I got my quarterly bill through STILL addressed to both of us and then I got the cheque through for £20 the letter addressed to both of us but cheque in his name.. I cannot afford to wait for 35 days or more because of their incompetence as my benefits are at the reduced rate as someone decided I was fit enough to work, following reports from the dwp and my ex causing trouble.
£20 is alot to loose for me at the moment.

Get BG to reissue the cheque, raise a formal complaint over their continuing failure to correct the account info and keeping sending you bills in joint names.
Make sure you put the complaint in writing (email possibly ok but NOT over the phone)
Quote any and all account numbers you have incase they're looking at the wrong one somehow.....0 -

I have banked cheques with totally the wrong name on them on many occasions however they were intended for me. Cashing a cheque not intended for you could get you in trouble.0
