To be honest the whole concept of these machines is wrong, it's just another way to cut jobs and make more profit for the company (none of which is likely to be passed on to the customer).

Now Toto must be brave and get over the *fear* of giving vouchers to real live people!!

Straying slightly from the point, but these tills are bl00dy brilliant! I am ALWAYS in a rush, whether in the city using the tesco at canary wharf, or the big suburban one near where i live. It means I don't have to actively avoid slow cashiers and can be in control of getting out of the shop. Only fly in the ointment is having to wait for my wine to be authorised. Personally I think they should make all self service tills as fast as M&S at Fenchurch st.

Also, please note, when companies introduce mechanised tasks, they very often deploy staff elsewhere. It isn't all doom and gloom.

Anyway, sorry, just wanted to make my feelings clear on the benefits of fast tills!

    (I think I need to get out more!:D )

Perhaps Tesco get what they deserve-any company who treats its customers as bad as they seem to when you read posts on here doesnt exactly get my sympathy.

I did use the self scan in my Tesco, and have used coupons, which have been accepted - many for items I didn't buy, but in date - but THEIR machine/computer accepted it. !!!
Having read lots of the threads on MSE I made the decision to actively AVOID these tills. I offer my coupons to the sa, who either accepts them, or not. They then cannot claim I have acted dishonestly ( I hope)
But, you try avoiding these self scan tills when the supervisors are all but insisting you use them.
    1) I hate being told what to do and when to do it "Please place the article onto the belt....."" Please take the article out of the bag..." "Please wait for a supervisor...."
2)Anything reduced tends to not scan, and I end up having to manually input the code - 20 to 30 digits. Get one too many zeros and you have to start again. So much for saving time.
    3) When I did scan coupons, and feed them into the box, it often didn't even register the coupon, and kept asking for a coupon which I had already just given it. I ended up putting another coupon in, in the hope of it registering 'something' going in the box - so wasted a coupon. Now it appears if I had dared to put an old bus ticket in instead I might have been had up for stealing
The stores seem keen for self scan to be used and even increase the number they have, so presumably they weighed up the risk of abuse by either not scanning goods or coupon misuse. They obviously thought it was in their financial interest to proceed, hence my local Asda have now introduced them.
They can hardly play the innocent if they are misused. I assume these are another invention from our cousins across the pond, and you are not telling me that if there was any loop-hole in the system it wouldn't have been found by our American bretheran !!
I agree with the sentiments expressed by an earlier poster, it is all down to money. One supervisor can monitor 4 or 6 self scan machines - so 3 or 5 staff are either employed making sure their SELs are correct.....or the store saves even more on the wages bill

I have used the self scan tills twice only and have never attempted to use any vouchers on them. If I have vouchers I always go to the younge male weekend checkout operator.

The self scan tills worry me a little as you dont have to put a pin number in for your switch or credit card! (Self scan person told me they were really sophisticated!) What would happen if you dropped your card in the car park after doing your shopping and someone picked it up and then went through the self scan till with a trolley full?

I tend not to use self scan machines on principle too. If I hand over coupons, I prefer it be to a person who can either accept or not, rather than wait for the supervisor to check the coupons box and make a decision then.

In the past I have refused to be shoved on to a self scan machine because I like to chat to the SA as well - nothing like the personal touch. Although if Tesco's/ Asda have their way we'll all be served by machines in future.

Ask at customer services how many you are allowed and then just use those its usually 10%.

I deplore fat cat execs, footballers, senior MPs and the like earning money beyond most of our wildest dreams. I also have an issue with the magnitude of Tesco's profits. However, blatant theft is just that: theft. Never, ever justifiable, under any circumstances.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

    Hi Steve,

I agree with you entirely. I think if you read my posts that is exactly what I said
