Import duty/VAT on warranty replacements

A Canadian manufacturer has agreed to replace a faulty item that I bought from a supplier here in the UK (I'd rather deal directly with the manufacturer in this case). Kindly, they've agreed to send the replacement to me 'on trust' that I'll return my faulty item to them when I receive the replacement.

I don't have much experience of international post, but am I right in thinking that this transaction should be free of import duty & VAT? Assuming I am right, is it simply duty free or will I have to pay and reclaim? Do I need any special forms or anything?

Not sure if this is the right place to post but it looked the most likely place! Hope someone can help - Thanks... Oh, item value is around £100 if that makes any difference.
