Any ICT Technicians around?

There is an advert for a school ICT tech in the local paper. This is what it says:
We are seeking to appoint an ICT Technician to assist the Network Manager in the efficient operation of the school computer network and ancillary equipment as required. The successful candidate must be flexible and have a good working
knowledge of common applications.

I am flexible and have a good working knowledge of common applications assuming they mean Windows/Office etc, like the advert says. I can build PCs but have no knowledge of networks. Surely there is more to the job than what is mentioned in the advert?

Any advise on how to get into this field as it is something that sounds interesting even if I don't get this particular job. Any information appreciated.

Thanks I've read that thread and another one on working in IT but there is nothing on there that is helpful about ICT Techs as far as I can see.

It's all the same job, PC support with a bit of networking(which is no big deal), and maybe servers (a big PC).

I would either ring up and ask whether it would be worth you applying, or apply anywhere. The former would involve you (potentially) in less work!

Put it this way, the ones I have come across in a junior school my fiance taught in, the ones my children went and goto are not worth their salt.

Sometimes I think it's a case of what you look like or not what you know who you know.

The one with respect to my fiances ex school could not even send emails and understand cc.

The technician could not network 12 computers. She could not understand refresh rates. I won't bother going on.

Apply for the position, dress smart not too loud and give it 100%

You're probably better than most of the other candidates.

I doubt they want you to build anything though.

Edit/ you will need to fill in a disclosure form also.

Nearly all of the ICT adverts I've seen in the paper are positions that don't require any formal qualifications or much experience. This is usually reflected in the pay I've seen, from £12k-£18k pro-rata. A good general IT knowledge will likely be enough for most.

You could build up some decent hands on experience and basic networking if you have a good Network Manager though, so it could be a stepping stone to something better in a few years.
