Blanket on windscreen to reduce frost/de-icing

I've noticed that a couple of my neighbours have put a blanket or towel on their windscreens to help reduce the need for them to de-ice their car in the morning. It is too late for me to do this now as I already have frost on my car, but in future is this a good thing to do - does it actually work?

My worry has always been that it would actually freeze the towel to the car and I then have a whole new problem trying to get the ruddy thing off!!

Thanks in advance.

  • Ive got a frost cover. Its just some shiny nylon stuff - think it was a pound or two from Tesco, makes it easier on a morning.

I haven't tried a blanket or towel but have heard of this. I bought a very cheap (about £1.50) nylon windscreen cover from Tesco last year. When I remember to use it the windscreen is frost-free. This morning all I had to do was shake the snow off it and the windscreen was clear. Unfortunately, I didn't use it when I parked at work as it was still snowing. I wish I had. This was my worst experience of an icy windscreen-normally the snow is easy to clear off, but today it had turned to ice. It took me twenty-five minutes of scraping/spraying to clear it.
    The cover is on tonight.

My OH puts a blanket over the screen every night, no problem removing it.

Yes it works, no problem removing it in the morning. A bit of a risk using newspaper as it could stick to the glass.

I use also use a silver nylony thing from the pound shop, which has suckers that come around and attach on the inside of the windscreen.
  • i use a silver tarp trapped in the doors from wilkos, but i wont use it again as my car doors had water inside, ive used a blanket, but you will have to think where your going to put it, i hung mine over a fence, it was till wet each evening when i put it back on and then turned mouldy, hence why i brought the tarp! If you do use somthing try take a plastic bag with you to put it in, as you dont want it dripping all over your boot when you take it off in the morning.!
  • my husband just started putting an old bedsheet on his windscreen this week, says it's very effective - the ice has defied his ice scraper as it's been so thick!

+1. My OH uses it every night, and it seems to work fine.
