A little bugeting help if you can

Hey guys as I am fairly new to the boards and just before xmas me and DP are no longer working so we are on a mega tight budget we also have a DS who is 10, So I have been using up what we have in the fridge and freezer but need to do a weekly shop tomorrow ( it has to be weekly due to how we are getting paid right now) In total I have £50 to spend this week but we also need to get a taxi home as the shop is a fair distance from the house and our car blew up a couple weeks back I need to ideally do it all in Tesco again due to the distance etc.. So here is my shopping list for this week any tips on getting all for £40 or under?

Pork chops
Naan Breads
Tomato Puree
Mushrooms
Cold meat (3 packs pref)
Potatoes
Mustard
Chicken Breasts
Whole Chicken
Red peppers x2
Fajita kit
Sour cream
Frozen veg
Sausages
Gammon ( either steaks or joint)
Butter
Milk
Bread
Yoghurt's
Hand soap
Loo roll
Deodorant
Tea bags
Rice Krispies
Mini Marshmallows ( last 2 not really needed but would like to make some treats with my DS)

So any ideas

Thanks for looking and TIA

Loobie x :D

Could you not do an on-line shop. No taxi needed and search on here for a voucher for some money off ??

Not been impressed with Tesco delivery in the past TBH always late not the right stuff and the like! The Taxi Back is not the problem really it will only be a few quid so I don't mind paying it :)

  • Instead of getting a fajita kit, you could always try marinating your chicken in lime and garlic, whizzing a tin of tomatoes with some onion and herbs for the salsa and just picking up some wraps. Unless you wanna try the Fajita kit which is Tesco's own for £1 which I think is quite reasonable.

Did you get any bubble bath for Christmas? This can be used as handsoap if you have a squirty bottle thingy.

We got Smart Price mushrooms this week and we were VERY impressed indeed. Nice and big with loads of flavour. Wont go back to paying for the brand up now.

The cost of 2 peppers loose with roughly be the same as a bag of value peppers. Therefore you would get more and can bulk out meals.

Will let you know if I think of anymore :)

ETA - Bread, if you need to get a couple of loaves as you will be needing it for toast; get a reduced to clear loaf and stick it in the freezer

  • If it was me i would leave of the chicken breasts and either make do with your whole chicken-see the rubber chicken thread, someone cleverer than me will be able to do a link, or just search, or if thats not enough, use the money you spend on the breasts on a whole chicken as you will probably spend the same but will get much more for your money. In my house there is s adults and a one year old and i can make a chicken last at least three meals now thanks to OS!

Get frozen peppers-85p in Mr T i got some today, they will be cheaper and last longer.

Use own brand/basics as they are cheaper.

Go on to mysupermarket.com and put your list in and it will give you the total cost and tell you where you can make changes.

For your cold meats, luncheon meat from the deli is really cheap if its just for sandwiches.

Sure someone with more ideas will be along soon
  • Have plenty of bubble bath and shower Gel didn't even think to stick some into the empty bottle but I will now :) I usually only buy own brand Mushrooms as the 2 fellas in my ife are weird and don't like them. Thanks for those tips Nikki :D

Check out the whoopsie section first

I rarely buy chicken anymore - I use Turkey breast for currys, fajita's, casseroles etc. I've served it others and they've not noticed until I've mentioned it. However re. the comment above regarding whole chicken is worth costing up.

And don't buy the Fajita kit - Garlic and Lime (good suggestion above) and any other relevant spices in your cupboard will do trick

Go without the naan breads? Have more rice or if you need something else on the plate how about a handful of ovenchips if you already have some

I bulk out things like currys with different things - last nights (turkey) curry pot in which I made portions for the freezer was all the left over veg from the fridge (including an old parsnip!), an apple, frozen peas and a tin of flageolet beans (or could use different beans or lentils)

    Best of luck

Pork chops Do you know when Tesco's do their reductions? If so, can you time your visit to coincide with this as they might have some reduced meat?
Naan Breads - Check reductions in the bakery aisle
Tomato Puree Compare prices of tubes and tins to see which is cheaper. If you have any left over you can freeze it in ice cube trays for future use
Mushrooms - they sell frozen ones of these which are quite good
    Cold meat (3 packs pref)
Potatoes - buy the cheapest or if you've an Aldi near you they are on offer at 59p at the moment I think
Mustard -try Tesco's own brand or Tesco's discount brand
Chicken Breasts - try frozen ones could be cheaper
Whole Chicken - try frozen one or look and see if there are any on offer
Red peppers x2 - try frozen
Fajita kit - I think these might be on offer at the moment.
    Sour cream
Frozen veg - don't know what you're after here but look out for Value frozen veg which is quite good
Sausages These can sometimes work out cheaper if you buy them frozen
Gammon ( either steaks or joint) - a joint will probably work out better value
Butter I buy whatever is on offer
Milk Tesco sell purple top (0.75% fat) milk - I think 6 pints is around £1.25. I buy it and freeze it. Also I keep some value dried skimmed milk powder in the cupboard which I use for cooking
Bread - Look for ones on special offer or try the reduced section of the bakery department
Yoghurt's The value yogurts at around 29p for 4 are quite good - also Tesco's own pack of 6 (various flavours) for £1 are popular in our house. Alternatively you could buy some natural yogurt cheaply and add your own fruit.
    Hand soap
Loo roll - look for offers or try the Value stuff
Deodorant Try buying a roll on - it seems to last longer
Tea bags Buy Tesco's own brand
Rice Krispies - Buy Tesco's own rather than Kelloggs
Mini Marshmallows ( last 2 not really needed but would like to make some treats with my DS) - Look on the confectionary aisle for these first rather than the baking aisle - they might be cheaper.

    So any ideas

    Thanks for looking and TIA

That's a lot of meat for 2 adults & 1 child for a week....especially if you are buying cooked meat as well. How many meals will you get off the chicken? Why not try some veggie meals to reduce your costs & meat consumption? Also look at the rubber chicken thread

Buy the cheapy bags (3 for a £1?) and cut them up into bits
