Anyone any good with wiring patch panels?

Been trying to get this to work all day at work, well, I say all day....All day in IT guy terms :rotfl:

Can't figure it out for the life of me. I know the diagram is on the back but I can't understand why it has A and B and then different configurations for the wires.

At first I thought each Cat 5 port came off 4 wires on the top (Orange/White-Orange-Blue/White-Blue) and 4 off the bottom (White/Green-Green-White/Brown-Brown) but when I tested it, it didn't work. So then I wasn't sure if each Cat 5 port came off the 8 top wire bits. Pretty confused. I've attached some photos to show you what I'm working with.

Any help would be much appreciated :) Sorry for the untechnical terms. Tried explaining myself as well as I can but if you have any questions just ask :D

It has A and B because one is for normal straight through, and the other for crossover. I always find it easier to follow the numbers and associate the correct colours to it.
    So, for straight through:
    1 Orange/White
    2 Orange
    3 Green/White
    4 Blue
    5 Blue/white
    6 Green
    7 Brown/White
    8 Brown

If you look at the numbers on your photos and my colours it should hopefully become clear

Last time I wired up some LAN outlets, all I did was to use the same type (A or B) at both ends. I'm fairly sure that if you use A at one end and B at the other you are effectively creating a crossover.

What you described doing first looks to be right (type A) provided the socket at the other end of the wire is also type A. So to wire up outlet 18 at the top of your photo, you would punch down the colours in the order you describe on the leftmost four terminals, both top and bottom.

One other possibility is that you may not have punched some of the wires far enough - I know that some punch-down tools don't actually work very well (mine doesn't, so I have to punch several times in places).

It's not 100% clear, but I would say its 4 top and 4 corresponding bottom for each port.

Do you think each port is 4 wire slots on the top and 4 on the bottom or do you think the top left 8 is for one port, then the bottom left 8 for another?

    Thanks for your help :)

Working on the assumption the 4 left most slots (top and bottom) are for one port would I be right in thinking they go in this order (from left to right):

    Green/White ---- Green --- Blue/White --- Blue

    Orange/White --- Orange --- Brown/White --- Brown?

I think you have got it :) - assuming of course that the other end is correct - I hope you have got a tester :D

Yes - though you quote Type B there and would need corresponding Type B at the other end. The order that you described in your OP (taken left to right) would be correct for type A.

After refreshing my memory on this, the A and B actually refer to standards - 568A and 568B. The norm seems to be to use 568B, which is how most things are wired now.
If you want straight through you can use A-A or B-B, and for crossover A-B.

So the B configuration is the correct one for my mind - as long as it's the same at both ends.

Thanks. I'll take a note of each. I think it's type A but that's what I did earlier and it didn't work so perhaps it's type B. Will check tomorrow.

Thanks very much for the help everyone :D Very much appreciated!
