Quickest way to rip DVD to DivX

I recently acquired a DVD-writer and am attempting to backup several video files, films, etc. and want to convert some to DivX to save space. However, I had no idea how laborious the process can be. With all previous experience of digital technology everything has seemed quite simple and quick, but this is proving anything but.
An example being converting a DVD to DivX whereby, using Dr. DivX, trying to convert a group of files approximately 4gb to about 1gb, the process has taken 1hr15mins and has a remaining time of over 6hrs!
I'm well aware my Celeron 2.3ghz processor is not cutting edge, but running with 1gb RAM I am surprised just how slow this process is - first impressions suggest it is perhaps too slow to be viable.
Am I going wrong somewhere - is there a speedier way of doing things?
Thanks all

Google AutoGk, nice easy interface for Gordian Knot for creating XviD/DivX's. You'll probably need DVD Decrypter too. It can be found on sites such as afterdawn."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0

Thats what I do as wolfman suggests autogk is a great app and contains the software to encode mpeg2 to DIVX or XviD. ON my P4 2.4@3ghz (dual) it takes about 50% more than the length of the video so say 2hour would take 3hours0

With a Celeron you'll probably be looking at around 2x realtime, so a 2 hour film may take 4 hours to do one pass. AutoGk requires two passes, the first is to work out the correct rates/ratios so that an exact filesize can be met the second time round. So say around 8 hours per film at a guess, although I may be way out.
Go with Xvid when encoding, and encode the audio as an mp3, the VBR 192 setting in AutoGk is about right (under the Advanced section)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I set mine for size say 2x700mb and occasional 1.4gb so 3 per dvd, with ac3 audio where possible and 2pass.0
