Help! Reduced Items

I hope you can help. (I hope this is the right place to post, if not please re-direct me!!)
Today I went into my local Co-op / Alldays and they had about five packs of sausages reduced to 53p each. I brought 2, plus some other bits (milk for work etc). Anyway when I got to the till the total price on the till was £1.26, but the sales lady got out her calculator and said it was £1.79. I questioned this and she called the manager, who said that there is a "bug" in the system and the sausages were on offer and it was taking the additional discount off and she was correcting it manually with the calculator.
I stuck to my guns and refused to pay additional money that wasn't on the till and she said I would have to pay seperately for the items. I said no (OMG - I hate scenes!), and she finally agreed and let me have the items for £1.26, but she then said (the manageress) that she had made me aware of the "bug" and that next time I should be prepared to pay separate or agree to the calculator total.
Sorry this is so long, but is this right, was I in the wrong not to accept the manual total?
I know that there is so much experience here that I would ask you.
Hope you can help

As far as I would be concerned, a bug is not my problem.
But if they don't want to sell the goods to me for that price then that is their perogative.
But they must then remove the incorrect prices displayed on everything (and I may just wait to check that they have!!)
Trading Standards would have a field day with a "bug" in the system. Have you emailed your local one yet to mention your concerns????0 -
I recall a thread about when tesco/asda ect reduce items that are included in their BOGOF offers and they had to give you them on BOGOFF also although they tried to get out of it. So I would assume that its a similar idea.
I would have stuck to my guns also, after all they cannot give you a recipt for the goods totalWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
I think cause of the bogof bit local co-op had almost to pay customers to take the reduced stuff away!!! Was some funny way of doing things. Nice though and well done for sticking to your guns.Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

The bug affects most supermarkets and works in two ways. If a reduced item is BOGOF or "buy 2 get £xxx off", the till generally discounts the item by the original amount. If the deal was "buy 2 for £xxx", then the discount only goes through in some supermarkets (yes to Tesco, no to Co-op in my experience).
Many supermarkets don't even notice, especially when the items are part of a large trolley of shopping. But my local Sainsburys is on the ball and they are ready to put the proper price through for a reduced item which costs maybe 10p and (if the "bug" were left to itself) would get you maybe £1.50 off!
My opinion? I think they're within their rights to do this. If I see a VERY reduced item I am happy just to get it at that price (50p for organic chicken breasts is fine by me!). I expect the supermarket to protect its interests and to be honest, if they're giving something away for silly money, I am grateful just for that and I don't see a problem in the supermarket making sure it's not actually losing money.Operation Get in ShapeMURPHY'S NO MORE PIES CLUB MEMBER #1240 -

Mt local ASDA has a sign on the reduced fridges, to say that any BOGOF discount doesn't count on reduced items. Don't know what TS would say, but I guess ASDA are covering themselves by stating in writing.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

I must have got a good deal in Sainsburys judging by this. I bought some rasberries reduced to 30p per punnet. They were originally £1.99 per punnet - buy 2 for £3.00 I got the whole discount allowed and they actually paid me to take them away - I got 6 punnets!:D"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0

this used to happen in my tescos but sadly they seem to have fixed it now......but technically if items still stickered buy 1 get 1 free could you argue an overcharge?0

I worked for the co-op back in 2000, and this 'bug' with the tills happened back then too. All the staff knew about it and I'm pretty sure that the managers did too. If its taken them more than 5 years to get round to fixing it then they shouldn't be complaining.
Saturday afternoon is usually the best time to try and get these as they change the offers on Sunday and usually have extra stock to get rid of.2007 comping challenge - Won £25 / need £1040 -
Oh and I just remembered something else, if your buying something that's BOGOF and the first one scanned is reduced then the second one will still go through as free at full price even if it's not reduced. So you get one to use that week and one that will last till later in the week. You have to be careful about how you put the items on the belt to make sure you get it, but if your buying more than a couple of things it should be fine.2007 comping challenge - Won £25 / need £1040

Hi Lottie,
You should get even more help with this on the Shop but don't drop board, so I'll move your thread over there.
