Laptop speed dropped

Good evening MoneySavers!

Basically, my laptop speed (mainly Internet Explorer) has dropped quite a fair bit. It happened just before christmas and I eventually had to do a factory reset because it wouldn't boot up properly.

Even after the reset, Internet Explorer has been very slow and it is very slow at opening new tabs/links and moving between tabs. Prior to this it was reasonably quick.

I have looked in task manager and Iexplorer.exe is often running at upto 500,000k!!! Which seems ridiculous compared to the other processes running and assume that this is why other programmes run slowly when IE is open.

OS: Windows Vista SP2
Ram: 1gb

Any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Im not the most technically minded but below is the Hijackthis logfile

Give firefox a bash, i highly recommend it, but i think you main problem for decreased speeds is that if I'm not mistaken, vista requires up to 1gb ram to run effectively. and after a while ram you start to loose ram. (somebody stop me if this is rubbish) and i gues the more you put on the laptop the more the 1gb of ram will struggle to keep things snappy. maybe try deleteing some unneccesary programs/files etc?

that does seem rather bloated. my current firefox process (with 10 tabs open) is only using 185mb compared to the 500mb that IE is using.

for a start, the toolbars (AOL, Ask, Yahoo etc) can be uninstalled.

edit - and you will need more than 1gb ram to run vista at a decent speed
  • Thanks for your suggestions folks.

I have used Ccleaner and got rid of a few programmes but it hasnt made much difference.

With regard to needing more RAM, the laptop used to perform adequately fast enough but took a turn for the worst at some point and performance deteriorated. A bit like me when it gets to a dull wednesday afternoon in work :D

I thought I may have Laptop Swine Flu or another virus but my anti-virus didnt find anything

I will give another browser a try to see if it helps!

Is it clogged up with fluff inside?

If it is over heating, then some processors go into 'limp' mode to protect the machine.

Might go part way to explaining why there was not the return to speed after re-installing.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yeah, i'd give it a good clean out see how that goes, (don't be rough :)) i used compressed air in a can to blow away the dust off important components in my computer, my be worth giving that a go. Also check in your processes that there aren't any needy programs running in the back ground that are unnecessary.

i seriously need to find a solution to why firefox for me uses 734,388k
  • Your hijack log-file answers your own question Most of the services consuming both the CPU & Memory are not needed.

A non Vista system if using 4 gig might cope with the swollen requirements but Vista on 1 gig with AERO & Sidebar & Mobile Device running apart from IE8 plugin's is dragging you slithering to a halt.

Most of the stuff is not needed at all, and those that are can be changed from 'permanantly loaded' to 'on demand' in the Services.

Much of the stuff in msconfig does not need to be loaded at startup, Cyberlink, Adobe and all of your updaters are just eating your resources.

You must have lots of icons in the BRHS & BLHS of your screen - all are pigs eating your CPU cycles.

    Your solution :
    - get some help with turning off all non-essential services and process[es]
    - change O/S to Win7 or WinXP
    - buy and install some more memory

i did think that it might be a "fluff" problem because I used to just prop the thing on a cushion and then wonder why it got hot! It is now propped on a makeshift tray and doesn't get as hot any more.

Richie - thanks for your advice. I will look into stopping some of the start-up processes that aren't needed.

I think the problem maybe underlying somewhere in Internet Explorer. I have downloaded Google Chrome to try it out and it is using far less memory (circa 70,000k with 4 tabs open compared to 500,000k with just one IE open) and the laptop is back to the decent speed it was before it all went pear shaped.

just hope there's nothing nasty hiding in there somewhere
