grrr wireless probs.. dg834gt

Hey hey.

Had the dg834g.. amazing.. lappy would connect and ping router with 1/2/3ms all the time from downstairs.. then it broke after 2 years

so upgraded to dg834gt which has a smaller areial but supposedly better wireless.. from next to the router, same ping.. from downstairs i get fluctuations from 1 to 500 with a whole load of time outs and no constant connection.. !!!!!!?

Tried messing around with aerial/position etc.. nothign works..

the ONLY thing changed in all of this is the router.. faulty router? faulty aerial? or just worse :S

You can try changing the channel the wireless uses. It could be getting interference from other wireless devices or even another wireless router in your area.

Just to check, which firmware version is it. Back in the day there were a host of firmware releases that were awful. I think it's something like v1.02.04 that you should have.

Firstly, strip it down to the bare essentials. Turn of WPA/WEP and try to get it running.

Maybe in the wireless section, don't use Auto 108Mbps, but set it to "g + b" instead. Also switch off any boosts etc...

What network card/adapter do you have in the machine that isn't connecting consistantly?

Aye got the latest firmware...

Turned WEP off... no difference...

It is set to G&B as default.. so havent tried auto.. and I dont know where any settings for boosts are.

The card is the intel 2200 BG wireless laptop adapter.. tried installing new drivers for that too but no difference..

I used to share my internet connection with my neighbour, my router (DG834G) was on the first floor and my neighbour's PC on the ground floor next door and quite a long way apart. When he experienced problems with the connection, I tried different channels and ended up with channel 9 and the antenna on the router parallel to the floor. If you haven't tried something like that, give it a try.
Otherwise turn the router off and check if you can pick up any other networks in the area as they might be causing interference.
Those problems are such a pain... Have you tried attaching the old antenna on the new router if possible (I haven't checked if I can detach it from mine).
I assume the zero configuration utility is not causing you any problems (as if it is enabled and you're using the adapter's own connection software you're heading for trouble, i.e frequent loss of connection etc.).
Sometimes when having connection problems, rebooting the computer (not the router) sorts the problem out. Since I moved to WPA from WEP, every couple of weeks or so the computer suddenly drops the connection and is unable to obtain an IP address after that. Rebooting my laptop seems to fix the problem.

I did try using the old antenna.. but no work for moi!

If i change the channel on the router will i ened to change it on the lappy? if so how cheers

I have had this problem for ages now, every morning when I wanted to go online I would have to switch the netgear off and on to get any decent connection. It is a known issue with the dg834gt but I ended up giving it away and I am now using a BT Voyager 2091 which has been superb as I have had no drop outs as yet!!

Strange thing is that it works fine on dads laptop thus I am thinking its an issue with mine..

I originally tried windows zero thingy on its own.. no work.. then i installed intels software.. no work.. but i hadnt disabled windows zero.. so i'll do that and try again tonite.

Yeah if possible, it's always worth trying to get wireless working via Windows inbuilt wireless-zero configurator, rather than a 3rd party piece of software.

To get the adapter to work with the zero configuration service, you need to install the drivers first. Sometimes this means that you end up installing the manufacturer's software as the drivers don't appear on the CD, but are part of the installation program. You can sometimes download just the driver from the manufacturer's web-site. If you have to install their software and want to use the windows mechanism (zero-config), then remove its entry from the startup menu (assuming they use that method for starting up the software). I do find software supplied by manufacturer's very annoying, especially if the drivers are not available on their own.
As far as the channel is concerned you don't have to worry about it if you're using the windows mechanism. If you're using the manufacturer's software, it depends. For my wireless adapter, to configure the software at the correct channel and having the card connecting every time automatically, I had to change the settings from infrastructure to ad-hoc, modify the channel and change back to infrastructure. Very, very annoying.
Sorry I can't be more specific, as I'm not familiar with the software for your adapter. For simplicity try and use the windows mechanism (but make sure the manufacturer's software is not running at the same time).
