When your friend who lives in a van happily admits to you (and few other non-van dwellers), that the water in her hotwater bottle is the same water for months on end, and is only topped up when the steam from the 'hotwaterbottle only' stove kettle has reduced it's volume... and you totally understand and start doing the same...Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. When you cut the satiny loops out of clothes to thread through gift tags, which you made from cards with pinking shears and a hole punch
When you save/freeze the sauce from a take away curry to make the next one
When you divide the mince (to which you've mixed in a good handful - or two - of porridge oats) into bags for freezing, then take a spoonful out of each bag to make an extra one
When you pour a kettle of boiling water over a big bowl of pasta or rice, put it in the microwave, bring back to the boil and leave, covered with a cotton tea towel, to cook in its own heat before freezing in portions0 -
When you use the water from the dehumidifer to water the plants and wonder what else you could use it for0

I am VERY depressed. I'm addicted to this site but I am a really crap cook and my attempts to cook good cheap wholesome food is ending up costing me more as I'm throwing away more than we eat.
I can feed my family on beans on toast or egg and chips ...and save money but I want to be able to put things in the oven or slow cooker or whatever that turn out nice. The only thing I have mastered is broth and nice as it is there is only so much you can eat. Is any one in the same situation??
This was me 18 months ago, Christmas dinner for my kids was a pre-cooked roast chicken and a ready made frozen trimmings.:o
You've just got to keep at it...my shopping bill has gone from over £400 a month to £185 for 5, i still turn out the odd inedible meal but then even the best cooks dont know how a meal they have never made will turn out, but thats now part of the fun and thanks to all on here i have enough basic recipes to make a healthy week's menu plan with the odd disaster to ring in the changes
Best of luck
you also know your a moneysaver when if on an E7 electric meter you tell yourself its no hardship to get up at 5am and do the washing/ ironing/baking while the world are still warm in bed.0 -
I have the quidco fits too...and get slightly annoyed with people when you explain it all to them and they either don't get it or choose not to use it for whatever reason! You can lead a horse to water and all that!
Ones i have done for a long time: Whoopsies, cutting open toothpaste, face creams etc, making meals from scratch inc. sauces,
Am slowly but surely converting the bf too - who thought the freezing curry sauce was an amazing idea...
Am learning about stock, soup and making my own bread...
Need to learn about using oats to make my mince go further...Proud DFW Nerd #62

Or when they are asking for something and the first thing they say is "I don't mind if it comes off ebay"
Oh my god !!! That describes us so well !!! My 11 yer old is brilliant at shopping with me - we split up and go to the two different reduced sections at Sainsburys the second we get in the store. She also used to be brilliant at Tescos when they had H&B leaflts in strange places...she'd hunt them out with a money saving radar !!0 -
When you get excited that you've got the lumpy stalk from a head of brocolli that you know will make a nice pot of soup, but have to hide it or OH will chuck it out!0
