Gap year travel ?

Just had a phone call from my dd - she's just booked her 'gap year' travel. Have known it was going to happen for ages - but now it's definately happening! I'm really excited for her but at the same time scared. Just her and gf from Uni. (they are 22) and are leaving 25/9 for Borneo, Malaysia, Australia, NewZealand, Fiji, and China! (there may be more places - I couldn't take it in) for about 9 months.
Have any of you lot been through this either as a parent or the one actually travelling? And if you were a parent, did it work out ok, how did you feel about letting your child go. Was it a daughter or son?
If you were the one travelling, did it go ok and was it all worth it?

One of my biggest regrets is not doing this - good luck to her, it all sounds lovely. I am so jealous - I'm going to use my pension lump sum to take a gap year when I retire lol
