It's Chips and Jackets, Peas and Trousers.0 -
What make are they?
Shimano used to have a good site with tech pages for maintenance.0 -
By far the best;
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/
and
http://www.parktool.com/repair/
Fix anything bikey with those. :beer:0 -
Sorry guys didn't check back for a while, but thank you all for the sites. My gears are Shimano, they won't change down just stick on the really easy gear (not good especially when going downhill!). Now I'll have a go at fixing them.0

It could be just the cable sticking
Is there any kinks or sharp bends in the cable (yes) replace all.
When you change the gears to does the cable go slack (NO)
replace the cable inner and outer.
(Yes) the actual gear's have gunk on them or sezed.
My money is on the cable being u/s.
If it is a twist grip gear system ( a gallon of petrol and a match helps) check the cable for rust etc and try to clean the inner cable and replace the outer it is a pain to replace inners on twist grips.
If you do replace the inner on the twist grip make sure you grease the it.
NiallSpending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.0 -

You might just have mixed your words up.... but if its too easy to pedal then you want to be changing UP not down0
