I don`t want to hi-jack the thread, although it looks obsolete now anyway.
My Myson Orion boiler has been making knocking/banging noises for a couple of months but I didn`t want to do anything in the recent cold snap in case things went wrong.
The system was partly drained a week ago and via the header tank I added Sentinel SX100 and have been running since although the noises still persist.
The boiler starts up and after about 15 minutes the noises start.
The temp on the boiler is set at 7 (max) and the pump is the middle setting of three.

Should I now add Sentinel SX200 and see if that works.
(I know it would have been easier to do it at the same time but I wanted to see if sx100 would help)

Is there any other thing that needs checking regarding the boiler noises?

    Hi

Sorry been away from the forum for 24 hours so hadn't seen your post yet. My first reaction is "Is it kettling?" If so you've identifed the correct product in X200. Its possible there is air in the primaries as well as the system has been recently drained although I'd expect the horrendous noise and vibration this causes to be evident before 15 mins after startup.

When was the boiler last serviced?

Whats the state of your system water? Are the rads hot at the top but cold in the centre bottom.

    Cheers

PS X100 is an inhibitor not a descaler.

    Thanks for that keystone.

The water in the rads is clear, the rads are all hot, last serviced three years ago.

I noticed that having turned down the boiler water temp from max (7 ) to just under 6, it`s less noisy.

By kettling do you mean like "popping" as though a burner is blocked?

    Air in the primaries
apart from the rads and the pump, there`s only a "dead-end pipe" which comes from the 3 port motorised valve that can be bleed, that I`m aware of.

OK so there are no sludge issues then which is what the X100 is designed to keep at bay.

I mean the noise just like a kettle makes as its coming to the boil and its got a load of scale on the element. Same sort of noise just a greater magnitude.

Sometimes you can get air in the primaries when refilling after a drain down. It usually works its way out eventually fetching up in the towel rad (if thats effectively your bypass). Your deadend pipemis where you can take air out yes but also at the pump or by cracking the upper cylinder coil connection. Depend how far you drained it down really.

More air than water in the boiler makes a seriously horrendous noise like a bomb going off. You'd know if you had that.

    Cheers

I think I`ll put a litre of SX200 in and see how it goes from there.

Hopefully when the weather improves I might even be able to get hold of a heating engineer to come and service the boiler.

the SX200 should be considered as a short term fix ..normally the heat exchanger will need cleaning or replacing ..but you may find that you put that in and all is well ..
