My Dh puts masking tape on the bit he wants to drill to stop the drill bit slipping and marking the tiles. Also, he starts making the hole with a small drill bit and then progresses onto a bigger one once a small hole has been made.

I usually use the tile drill bits rather than ordinary ones (for metal or masonry). Some people use bits for metal and use masking tape first to try to get a rough surface to start from. Don't put too much pressure on the drill. Also, it doesn't matter if it takes ages as long as it doesn't damage the tiles. Remember not to use the hammer drill setting.
  • the best way is to use a masonry drill bit but WITHOUT the drill on hammer action. use a bit of tape to stop the drill slipping and i wouldnt use a small bit forst because you risk cracking the tile

If you dont have a tile drill, Try sharpening up a masonry drill bit.
I sharpen the tungsten tips similar to the way I sharpen a normal metal drill bit, slightly slanted away from the tip. Leave a flat sharp front edge to the tungsten tip.
Dont use hammer or heavy pressure and dont open up smaller holes, use the one size drill bit. Take the glaze off the hole carefully before applying any pressure.

I always use a masonry nail to start the hole off. Tap it lightly with a hammer to break the hard fired surface. Than as others have sugested use a small masonry drill bit first, then the size you need for the actual hole.
