I don't have double glazing. My house is cold. Any tips?

My house doesn't have double glazing (I am private renting so can't change them) old wooden frames. House is cold and it is costing me a fortune heating the place!
What can I do?
Some windows have nothing up yet as haven't been moved in long, my mum said you can get a kind of film to put on? Or seal stuff round frames where draughts are? Or thermal curtains?
Any tips, ideas or suggestions welcome.

It is only a bargain if you need it!

Have you spoken to LL about the cold and/or getting double glazing installed?0

I only moved in in November and landlord allowed me to move in without paying any bond/deposit (and estate agent who he is in business with didn't charge me any fees either), so don't want to become a pestering tenant.
There were little things needed repairing which were done no problem. It will need doing at some point no doubt about that but for this winter I am just gonna have to put up with it and find the best ways to insulate the place. It is only a bargain if you need it!0 -
If the windows are draughty - you should contact the agent or the landlord - and they should remedy the problem. As if you start adding draft excluder etc they might complain that you have done damage. You don't have to pester, just say it is draughty and freezing, and ask them to take a look.
Any curtains up at the window will help conserve heat once they are pulled/closed. A friend just moved, and ordered these and has been plsd with them as not expensive for a temporary accommodation: http://www.blindsinabox.co.uk/ not sure if it would make a difference re heat, as the flat is double glazed.0 -
First off, speak with Landlord, and make enquireis about secondary glazing or double glazing
second, do what your mum or gran used to do, get very thick heavy curtains to keep the heat in your rooms0 -
First thing - do a trawl of your local charity shops and put a wanted ad on your local freegle/freecycle for thick curtains. Put them up and keep them closed during the very cold weather even in the daytime if you are not using the room.
Don't let them hang over the radiators, either tuck them behind or bunch them up onto the windowsill. If you have a room that you don't use at all, so won't need to open the curtains, consider covering the window space with an old duvet - a single one will probably be big enough for most windows just tack it to the window frame (you can put a duvet cover on it so it isn't too ugly, and you can pick them up for a couple of quid in charity shops.)
Keep doors closed to keep the heat in.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Well some of windows have draughts, some don't. Doors front and back definetly do! So will speak to them about that.
They will still be colder than double glazing though so yes thick curtains probably the way to go. Not had the means to get anything for windows yet but will be able to sort these now we are in the new year, will have a look for some bargains!
I am not living in victorian squalor or anything! House is not damp thankfully. In my last house I had DG but no central heating, at least this one has the means to get warm.It is only a bargain if you need it!0
