Oldwiring,
I too am a simple soul when it comes to this sort of stuff! Are you playing the DVD back through AV source on the TV, ours has two AV1 and AV2. When you switch to AV you can sometimes switch to S-Video by accident, this causes it to playback in B&W.
Ignore me if the above is a stupid response to your question but it took me ages to work out what was going on when our DVD's would only playback in B&W.0 -
Hey, I forgot about that. Mine does that too!0

You may have tried this already but...
Press the 'Cinema' button on your remote. It should be the second key below the power/standby button. Pressing this rotates through some options which affect the picture. One setting is called User and this allows you to have User-defined contrast, brightness, sharpness, colour, and
gamma ( brightness distribution ) settings.
Press the cinema button once to go to the 'Normal' setting which is the factory default.

I think the best way to setup your TV-VCR-DVD is to connect the TV to the DVD with a SCART to SCART cable and connect the VCR (antenna out) to the TV via an aerial cable and plug your existing aerial cable into the VCR antenna in socket.0

Thanks everyone. In somnia solved it at 7.15 this morning. My TV remote has a TV/AV button which brings up three screen choices AV1/5 2/5 3/5 and these are accessed through the coloured teletext buttons. I had pressend the button for AV2/5 ( green) but had pressed it twice so that I had gor AV24 instead of AV2- and so the B&W pic.
I hope the explanation is a little clearer than mud.:D0
